Full transcript of Foreign Minister Wang Yi's Press Conference, with Tech Policy and Trade Policy highlighted
On the morning of March 7, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a press conference on issues related to "China’s Foreign Policy and External Relations" and answered questions from the media. The following is the portion concerning tech policy and trade policy (the full transcript of the press conference is attached at the end of the article):
CGTN Reporter:
DeepSeek has suddenly emerged and showcased China’s innovative capacity in the field of artificial intelligence to the world. Some say that the United States cannot accept China’s technological innovation leading the world, and might resort to “if you can’t beat them, rob them” or “if you can’t get it, destroy it.” This is seen as an instinctive reaction to China’s technological rise. How do you view the competition between China and the US in the field of technology?
Wang Yi:
In recent times, China’s technological innovations have continually surpassed people’s expectations. From the "Two Bombs and One Satellite" era to "Shenzhou" and "Chang’e," then to 5G, quantum computing, DeepSeek, and more – the relentless efforts of generations of Chinese people have never ceased, and the road to becoming a technological power in China is only widening.
Of course, this road has not been smooth. Whether it is in aerospace technology or chip manufacturing, the unreasonable suppression from outside forces has never ceased. But wherever there is blockade, there will be breakthroughs; wherever there is suppression, there will be innovation; the most violent storms create the stage for “Nezha’s havoc in the sea” and “soaring to the skies.” As an old Chinese poem says, “The green mountains cannot conceal the eastward flow of the river.” “Small Yard, High Fence” cannot stifle innovative thinking, and decoupling or cutting off chains will ultimately isolate oneself.
Science and technology should not be used as tools to weave an iron curtain; rather, they should be regarded as a wealth to be shared by all. In order to promote the common development of humanity, China is earnestly implementing President Xi Jinping’s "Global Governance Initiative on Artificial Intelligence," has released the "Inclusive AI Capacity Building Plan," and, together with Brazil, South Africa, and the African Union, launched the "International Open Science Cooperation Initiative." We call for greater emphasis on building technological capacities in the Global South, ensuring that no country is left behind. We are willing to share our innovation achievements with more countries and to pursue the stars and the sea together.

Shortly after Trump’s return to the White House, he imposed a new round of tariffs on Chinese imports into the US citing fentanyl. At the same time, he expressed his desire to establish a good relationship with China. Compared to his first term, how will China deal with the Trump administration in the coming four years?
Wang Yi:
Mutual respect is the fundamental principle in the interactions between nations and an important premise for China-US relations. No country can harbor the illusion of suppressing and containing China on one hand while developing a good relationship with it on the other. This “two-faced” approach is not only detrimental to the stability of bilateral relations but also fails to build mutual trust.
Regarding fentanyl, it should first be clarified that China has consistently taken a firm stand against drug trafficking and production. Today, China is the country with the strictest and most thorough anti-drug policies in the world. As early as 2019, at the request of the United States, we became the first country in the world to place all fentanyl-related substances under control. The abuse of fentanyl in the US is an issue that the US itself must face and resolve. In a humanitarian spirit, China has provided various forms of assistance to the United States; the US should not repay kindness with resentment, nor should it impose arbitrary tariffs—this is not the conduct of a responsible major country.
As the saying goes, “If you cannot succeed, look inward.” The United States should review its actions: What has it really gained from these years of tariff and trade wars? Has the trade deficit expanded or narrowed? Has the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector risen or fallen? Has inflation improved or worsened? Have people’s lives gotten better or worse? China-US economic and trade relations are mutual and reciprocal. If both sides choose cooperation, they will achieve mutual benefit and a win-win outcome; if one side continues to apply pressure, China will resolutely take countermeasures.
As the world’s largest developing country and the largest developed country today, both China and the United States will exist on this planet for a long time, and thus must coexist peacefully. As President Xi Jinping pointed out in his phone call with President Trump at the beginning of this year, conflict and confrontation should not be the chosen path. China and the United States share extensive common interests and have vast room for cooperation. They can be partners, complement each other, and prosper together.
China will continue to adhere to the three principles proposed by President Xi Jinping—mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation—and is committed to the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-US relations. At the same time, we hope that the US will listen to the voices of the peoples of both countries, recognize the historical trends, view China’s development objectively and rationally, and engage with China in a positive and pragmatic manner, so that together we can follow a path of proper coexistence that is beneficial to both countries and the world.

A press conference was held with foreign and domestic reporters, during which Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, answered questions on “China’s Foreign Policy and External Relations.”
Moderator:
Good morning, friends from home and abroad. Welcome to the press conference of the Third Session of the 14th National People’s Congress. The theme of today’s press conference is “China’s Foreign Policy and External Relations.” The press center is pleased to invite Mr. Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, to attend today’s press conference and answer your questions. Now, please allow Mr. Wang Yi to engage in exchange with everyone. Thank you.Wang Yi:
Good morning, reporters! I am very pleased to see you all again and I thank you for your continued concern and support for China’s diplomacy. The year 2024 is a year of profound changes in the international landscape and also a year in which China is making great strides in reform and development. Under the guidance of General Secretary Xi Jinping, China’s diplomacy has achieved significant progress, creating a favorable external environment for high-quality development, bringing valuable stability to a world of mixed turmoil and change, and taking new solid steps in the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
Although the international situation this year remains full of challenges, China’s diplomatic original aspiration remains unchanged. We will continue to work together with countries around the world, uphold the path of righteousness, grasp the trends of the times, defend international fairness and justice, and maintain world peace and stability.
Now, I am willing to answer your questions.
Reporter from CCTV:
Minister Wang Yi, hello. In the process of advancing the great power diplomacy with Chinese characteristics, head-of-state diplomacy has played a very critical and important guiding role. Could you please elaborate on the achievements of head-of-state diplomacy over the past year and what new highlights can be expected this year?Wang Yi:
Head-of-state diplomacy is the highest form of China’s diplomacy. Over the past year, President Xi Jinping personally charted the course and led by example. The achievements of head-of-state diplomacy have been abundant and many impressive scenes remain vivid in our memory. From the 70th anniversary commemorative meeting of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, to the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, and the China-Arab Cooperation Forum, our three major “home” diplomatic events have established a new benchmark for solidarity and progress among the Global South. From Europe to Central Asia, from BRICS to Latin America, four important visits have converged into a new momentum of global unity and cooperation. President Xi also received numerous foreign dignitaries and friends, holding over 130 foreign affairs meetings and engagements, thereby writing new chapters in Sino-foreign friendship. As the leader of a great power and a major party, President Xi, with his global vision and sense of responsibility for the times, has led China’s diplomacy to innovate while staying true to its principles, progressing steadily and promoting positive and profound changes in China’s relations with the world. First, China’s diplomatic policy positions – especially the major ideas and initiatives put forward by President Xi – are increasingly welcomed and supported by the international community; second, China’s active role in addressing global challenges and resolving hot and difficult issues has attracted growing expectations and acclaim from countries around the world; third, the success and inspiration of the Chinese path to modernization are being increasingly recognized and emulated by more countries.
The year 2025 will be an important one for both China and the world, and head-of-state diplomacy will usher in new highlights. Just last month, President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the Asian Winter Games, marking the beginning of this year’s “home” diplomacy. We will also solemnly commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and hold a series of major events including an SCO Summit. President Xi is scheduled to undertake several important foreign visits. Head-of-state diplomacy will write a new chapter of mutual progress and mutual achievement between China and the world. Thank you!
Reporter from TASS (Russia):
Since last year, China and Russia’s leaders have interacted intensively, and the relationship between the two countries is developing healthily. However, some are worried that the recent dialogue between Russia and the United States might affect the strategic coordination between China and Russia. How do you view China-Russia relations?Wang Yi:
China-Russia relations are asked about every year, but the angles are always different. I must emphasize that regardless of how the international environment changes, the historical logic of China-Russia friendship remains unchanged, and the intrinsic driving force does not diminish. Both sides have deeply summarized historical experiences and decided on permanent good-neighborliness and friendship, engaged in comprehensive strategic coordination, and sought mutually beneficial cooperation and win-win outcomes, because that is most in line with the fundamental interests of our peoples and the direction of progress in the times. China and Russia have explored a way of coexistence that is “non-aligned, non-confrontational, and non-targeted at any third party,” placing them at the forefront of a new type of major-country relationship and setting an example for neighboring countries. A mature, resilient, and stable China-Russia relationship will not change because of transient matters, nor will it be disturbed by third parties; it is a constant in a turbulent world, not a variable in geopolitical games.
Last year marked the 75th anniversary of China-Russia diplomatic relations. President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin met face-to-face three times, jointly leading China-Russia’s comprehensive strategic coordination partnership into a new historical stage.
This year is the 80th anniversary of the victory in World War II. China and Russia both fought bloodily on the main battlefields of Asia and Europe, making enormous sacrifices for the victory of the world anti-fascist war and contributing significantly to history. Both sides will take this important historical milestone as an opportunity to promote a correct view of World War II history, defend the achievements of the war’s victory, uphold the international system centered on the United Nations, and push the international order toward a more just and reasonable direction.

Reporter from Xinhua:
Minister, hello. You just mentioned that China’s diplomacy in 2024 has injected valuable stability into a turbulent world. In 2025, the international situation may become even more complex and entangled. What role do you think China’s diplomacy will play then? Thank you.Wang Yi:
As you said, the world today is characterized by entanglement and turmoil, and certainty is becoming an increasingly scarce resource globally. The choices made by countries—especially major powers—will determine the direction of the times and shape the global order. China’s diplomacy will unswervingly stand on the right side of history and on the side of human progress, using China’s certainty to stabilize an uncertain world. We will be a steadfast force in safeguarding our national interests. The Chinese people have a proud tradition of self-improvement; we do not pick fights, nor are we afraid of trouble. No extreme pressure, threat, or extortion can shake the united will of 1.4 billion Chinese people, nor can it halt the historic march of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
We will also be a force for justice in maintaining world peace and stability. We will continue to expand our equal, open, and cooperative global partnerships, actively practice China’s way of resolving hot issues, and, together with the Global South, write a new chapter of solidarity and self-reliance. We will prove with facts that the path of peaceful development is a bright road for lasting progress and should be the common choice of all nations.
We will be a progressive force for upholding international fairness and justice. We will adhere to true multilateralism, with the well-being of humanity and the interests of people in mind, promoting global governance through consultation, joint construction, and shared benefits. We will uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and work to build a more equitable and orderly multipolar world.
Finally, we will be a constructive force in promoting global common development. We will continue to expand high-level opening up, sharing the vast opportunities of China’s modernization with all countries. We will safeguard the multilateral free trade system, create an open, inclusive, and non-discriminatory international cooperation environment, and promote inclusive and shared economic globalization. Thank you!
Reporter from CNN:
After Trump’s return to the White House, he has vigorously pursued an “America First” policy—within less than two months, the US has withdrawn from several important international organizations and institutions, frozen most foreign aid, and its relations with traditional allies have become tense. Do you think these moves are beneficial to China’s development and do they provide China with a strategic opportunity to play a more important role in international affairs?Wang Yi:
There are over 190 countries in the world. Imagine if every country emphasized its own interests and worshiped the status of its own power; the world would regress to the law of the jungle, where small and weak countries would be the first to suffer, and the international order would be severely undermined.More than a hundred years ago at the Paris Peace Conference, the Chinese asked a historic question: is it “justice triumphing over might” or “might is justice”? The new Chinese diplomacy firmly stands on the side of international justice and resolutely opposes might and hegemony. History should move forward, not backward. Major powers should shoulder international responsibilities and act as responsible great powers. They should not be solely profit-driven nor should they bully the weak. In the West there is a saying, “There are no permanent friends, only permanent interests.” However, from China’s perspective, true friendship should be everlasting and interests should be shared.
President Xi Jinping, grasping the trends of history and standing at the forefront of the times, proposed building a community with a shared future for mankind. He advocates that countries set aside their differences and jointly protect the only planet on which humanity can live, and work together to build a community of shared destiny. This major idea not only embodies the fine tradition of Chinese civilization’s all-under-heaven view but also demonstrates the internationalist sentiment of the Chinese Communist Party, enabling us to stand on the high ground of human well-being and “stand at the pinnacle and overlook all the mountains below.” We are pleased to see that an increasing number of countries have joined the ranks to build a community with a shared future, with over 100 countries supporting the “Three Global Initiatives” and more than three-quarters of countries joining the Belt and Road Initiative family. History will prove that only those with a generous heart can truly be winners. Working together toward a community with a shared future will make this world a world for all nations, and the future a future for everyone.
Reporter from People’s Daily:
Could you please comment on the role played by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at the present stage? What proposals will China put forward during its tenure as the rotating chair, and what issues will be discussed at the SCO Summit hosted in China? Thank you.Wang Yi:
This year is “China Year” for the SCO. The SCO was born in China and is named after Shanghai, which holds special significance for us. We are very happy to welcome the SCO “home.”What makes us even more gratified is that after 24 years of development, the SCO has expanded from 6 members to a “big SCO family” of 26 countries, forming the largest regional cooperation organization in the world by area and population.
The key to the SCO’s growth and development lies in the continuous promotion of the “Shanghai Spirit” – upholding trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diverse civilizations, and the pursuit of common development – and in carving out a new path for regional cooperation.
As the rotating chair, China this year is conducting over 100 activities in the political, security, economic, and cultural fields under the theme “Promoting the Shanghai Spirit: SCO in Action.” We will use “Chinese actions” to showcase the Shanghai Spirit and drive the SCO forward with the “China engine.”
I would like to inform everyone that this fall, China will host the SCO Summit in Tianjin. At that time, the leaders of SCO countries will gather by the Haihe River to summarize successful experiences, chart a development blueprint, and build consensus for cooperation, so that the SCO can set off once again from China and work toward a closer SCO community with a shared future.
Reporter from Global Times:
Some hold the view that the current international order is at its most dangerous point since World War II, and that the role and authority of the United Nations are being undermined. How does China think this situation should be handled, and what role will China play?Wang Yi:
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. In the period immediately following World War II, one of the most important decisions made by the international community was to establish the UN as the main platform for maintaining world peace and conducting global governance. History has shown that the UN has withstood the test of time and has played a significant role. Now, the situation has changed dramatically, with unilateralism on the rise and power politics rampant. Some countries have raised various objections to the UN. However, China believes that the more complex the contradictions become, the more important the UN is; the more urgent the challenges, the more necessary it is to uphold the UN’s rightful authority.
All countries wish to avoid a return to the law of the jungle. To that end, we must first build a solid foundation of sovereign equality, recognizing that all states, regardless of size or strength, are equal members of the international community and that no country should dominate simply because it has a bigger “arm” or “fist.” Secondly, we must adhere to the principles of fairness and justice, oppose the monopolization of international affairs by a few countries, and ensure that the voices of the Global South are heard and the legitimate rights and interests of all countries are fully protected. Thirdly, we must uphold the concept of multilateralism, adhere to the principles of consultation, joint construction, and shared benefits, replace bloc confrontation with inclusive cooperation, and dissolve “small circles” through “great unity.” Fourthly, we must strengthen the authority of international law; major countries in particular must lead by example in terms of integrity and rule of law, oppose double standards and selective application of rules, and certainly not bully others or seize benefits by force.
China is not only a creator and beneficiary of the post-World War II international order, but also a defender and builder of this order. We have no intention of starting from scratch, nor do we support any country in doing so. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China is fully aware of the international responsibilities we bear, and we will firmly safeguard the central role of the UN, serve as a pillar of the multilateral system, and be the voice of justice for the Global South. Last month, China hosted a high-level meeting at the UN Security Council on the theme “Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance,” with over 100 countries enthusiastically participating, thus marking the beginning of a series of events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the UN’s founding. We are willing to work with all parties to revisit the founding spirit of the UN, adhere to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and build a more just and reasonable global governance system.
Reporter from Anadolu Agency (Turkey):
Last month, President Trump declared that he would “take over” and “own” the Gaza Strip, and he plans to relocate the Palestinians living there to neighboring countries. What is your view on this US plan and the future development of the Gaza Strip? What role will China play in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East?Wang Yi:
Thank you for posing this question on behalf of all our Arab brothers and sisters—it is an excellent question.Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people and is an inalienable part of Palestinian territory. Any attempt to forcibly change Gaza’s status will not bring about peace; it will only trigger further unrest. We support the Gaza Restoration Peace Plan jointly initiated by Egypt and Arab countries. One cannot defy the will of the people or abolish justice. If a major country truly cares about the people of Gaza, it should promote a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, increase humanitarian aid, adhere to the principle of “Palestinians governing themselves,” and contribute to the reconstruction of Gaza.
Instability in the Middle East makes the whole world uneasy, and the Palestinian issue remains the core of Middle Eastern problems. The cyclical nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is rooted in the fact that the “two-state solution” has only been half implemented—Israel has long been established, but a Palestinian state remains elusive. The international community’s next focus should be on the “two-state solution” and providing greater support for Palestinian statehood. Only in this way can Israelis and Palestinians truly live in peace, and the Arab and Jewish peoples coexist in long-term friendship. In this regard, Palestinian factions must first implement the Beijing Declaration and achieve unity and self-reliance; parties in the Middle East must overcome their differences and support Palestinian state-building; and the international community should forge a consensus for peace between Israelis and Palestinians and provide assistance.
China is a strategic partner of Middle Eastern countries and a sincere friend of our Arab brothers. China will continue to resolutely fight for justice, peace, and development for the people of the Middle East, and support Middle Eastern countries in independently determining their own destinies and exploring their own development paths, so that they may realize the dream of peaceful rejuvenation at the earliest possible time. Thank you!
Reporter from the Nigerian News Agency:
Last year, China successfully hosted the Beijing Forum of China-Africa Cooperation, and this year, you made your first New Year visit to four African countries. How will China implement the outcomes of the forum and help Africa achieve development and revitalization?Wang Yi:
China and Africa have always been good friends, partners, and even brothers with a shared destiny. Under the joint leadership of President Xi Jinping and African leaders, China-Africa relations have entered the best period in history. China has established a strategic partnership with every African country with which it has diplomatic ties, and the concept of a China-Africa community of shared destiny has been elevated to an “all-weather” level. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum. Over the past 25 years, China has helped Africa build or upgrade nearly 100,000 kilometers of highways and over 10,000 kilometers of railways. In the past three years alone, Chinese companies have created over 1.1 million jobs in Africa, and China has maintained its position as Africa’s largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years. China-Africa cooperation has provided tangible benefits to our African brothers and sisters. For instance, last year, a rice farmer from Gambia specially sent his rice to Hunan to express his gratitude to Yuan Longping because Chinese hybrid rice has enabled them to overcome hunger and embrace hope. Such stories happen almost every day in Africa.
Africa is the hope of the 21st century. Without African modernization, there can be no global modernization. The stability and development of Africa affect the common destiny of humanity, and the world should listen to African voices and pay attention to African concerns. Africa is undergoing a new awakening, and all countries should support Africa in forging a path of independent and self-reliant development.
This year marks the first year of implementing the outcomes of the Beijing Forum. We are willing to, in line with the “Ten Major Partner Actions” for China-Africa modernization, help Africa accelerate industrialization and agricultural modernization, implement zero tariffs on 100% of tax-line products, cultivate new growth points in digital, green, and artificial intelligence sectors, promote 1,000 small but beneficial livelihood projects, and strengthen exchanges on governance experiences to enhance Africa’s representation and voice in international affairs. The G20 Summit will be held on the African continent for the first time this year, and China firmly supports South Africa’s role as G20 president, leaving a distinct “African imprint” on global governance.
Reporter from Phoenix TV:
For a period of time, some countries have argued that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not equal the one-China principle—that it does not clearly define the sovereignty of Taiwan, nor does it prevent Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. What is your response to this?Wang Yi:
Such a narrative is a blatant challenge to the authority of the United Nations and the post-World War II international order; it is utterly absurd and dangerous. Those who propagate this view should first refresh their basic knowledge.Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory—this is both history and fact. This year marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s restoration. The victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression brought Taiwan back to China. The major Allied powers issued the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, which clearly stipulated that Taiwan, which Japan had taken by force, was to be returned to China, and Japan itself acknowledged its unconditional surrender in accordance with the Potsdam Proclamation. These documents confirmed China’s sovereignty over Taiwan and form an important part of the post-war international order.
In 1971, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 2758 by an overwhelming majority, deciding to restore the lawful rights of the People’s Republic of China in the United Nations and to immediately expel the representatives of the Taiwan authorities from the UN and all its affiliated organizations. This resolution completely resolved the issue of China’s representation in the UN, including Taiwan, and completely eliminated any possibility of creating “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.” The only designation for the Taiwan region in the UN is “Taiwan Province, China.” Taiwan has never been a country, neither in the past nor—and certainly not in the future. Advocating “Taiwan independence” is tantamount to splitting the country; supporting “Taiwan independence” is interfering in China’s internal affairs; and condoning “Taiwan independence” undermines stability in the Taiwan Strait.
The principle of sovereignty is the cornerstone of the UN Charter, and no country or individual should apply double standards. Respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries means supporting China’s complete reunification; upholding the one-China principle means opposing any form of “Taiwan independence.” The complete reunification of the motherland is the common aspiration of all Chinese, and it is an unstoppable trend and a matter of great justice. Advocating “Taiwan independence” only invites self-destruction, and using Taiwan to contain China is like a mantis trying to stop a chariot. China will eventually, and certainly, be reunified. Thank you!
Reporter from Pakistan News Agency:
China has always regarded its neighborhood as the place where it finds its roots, yet the United States is deploying intermediate-range missiles in the region and stoking conflicts. Some neighboring countries face high security risks, adding instability to China’s periphery. While these neighboring countries are eager to share in China’s development dividends, they also worry that Chinese products may impact their own industries. How does China view the situation in its neighborhood, and what new considerations does it have regarding its neighborhood diplomacy?Wang Yi:
Since the beginning of this century, Asia has experienced rapid growth and has become a global hub of development and a haven of peace and stability. This situation, which has not come easily, is something we must cherish and protect. Asia is not only China’s home but also the shared home of all Asian countries. President Xi Jinping has put forward the “neighborly diplomacy” concept of sincerity, trust, benefit, and inclusiveness, which has led China to open up new horizons in friendly cooperation with its neighbors. Today, China has reached a consensus on building a community of shared destiny with 17 neighboring countries, forming two clusters of shared destiny in the Southeast Asian and Central Asian regions. We have also signed Belt and Road Cooperation Agreements with 25 neighboring countries, and China is the largest trading partner of 18 of them. Today, China has become the cornerstone of stability in Asia, the engine of economic development, and the support for regional security.Of course, it is natural for neighbors to have occasional frictions. Historical issues and real interests must be properly managed. But we firmly believe that “a harmonious family prospers in all endeavors.” As long as we adhere to the idea of a “shared home” and the direction of building a community of shared destiny, and engage in equal consultation with mutual understanding, we will certainly be able to resolve differences and achieve win-win cooperation. China will also continue to expand its unilateral opening-up to its neighbors, sharing more development dividends with them.
Regarding the US deployment of intermediate-range missiles in the region, China firmly opposes it, and neighboring countries do not welcome it either. Over the past years, the so-called “Indo-Pacific Strategy” proposed by the US has done little for the region, except to stir up trouble and create divisions. It can be said that the US is more adept at causing problems than solving them.
Asia should not be an arena for great-power competition; rather, it should serve as a model field for international cooperation. We advocate an open regionalism that, based on mutual respect and win-win cooperation, allows all Asian countries to share in development opportunities. Thank you!
Reporter from AFP:
China and Europe have faced long-term tensions in economic and trade relations, especially in the fields of new energy and electric vehicles. In this context, how does the Ministry of Foreign Affairs view the development of China-Europe relations?Wang Yi:
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Europe. Looking back over the past half-century of exchanges, the most valuable experience has been mutual respect, the most powerful driving force has been win-win cooperation, the strongest consensus has been on multilateralism, and the most accurate positioning has been that of partnership.Over the past 50 years, China-Europe cooperation has made significant progress: bilateral trade has grown from $2.4 billion to $780 billion, and bilateral investment has increased from nearly zero to nearly $260 billion. The China-Europe Railway Express has cumulatively operated over 100,000 trains, becoming a golden channel connecting Asia and Europe.
Today, China and Europe together account for more than one-third of the world’s economic output, and the strategic significance and global impact of China-Europe cooperation are greater than ever. A healthy and stable China-Europe relationship will not only benefit both sides but also light the way for the world.
Earlier this year, President Xi Jinping spoke with European Council President Koskotas, emphasizing that the more severe and complex the international situation becomes, the more China and Europe should adhere to the founding principles of their relations, strengthen strategic communication, enhance strategic trust, and maintain their partnership. China remains confident in its relationship with Europe and believes that Europe can be a trusted partner. The two sides have both the ability and wisdom to resolve existing issues through friendly consultations, paving the way for the next 50 years of promising cooperation. Thank you!
Reporter from China Daily:
Last year, polls conducted by the Malaysian Merdeka Survey Center and the Singapore Yusof Ishak Institute showed a significant increase in Southeast Asians’ favorable views toward China. Meanwhile, a survey by the Pew Research Center indicates that people in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America—the Global South—are more likely to give China a positive evaluation compared to those in Europe and the United States. How do you view these poll results and the differences among them?Wang Yi:
People-to-people friendship is the foundation of bilateral relations and the driving force for promoting peace. With the sustained development of China’s economy and society and the continual expansion of high-level opening-up, exchanges and interactions between the Chinese people and people of other countries have become more frequent, and the distances between us have shortened. You mentioned that people from the Global South have given China a positive evaluation, and that is indeed the case. China has always treated developing countries sincerely and built a natural closeness and mutual recognition with them. At the same time, I have also noticed that among people in developed countries, embracing China is gradually becoming a trend. Whether it is through visiting China or interacting on social media platforms, people are witnessing a safe, open, and modern nation and meeting friendly, inclusive, and humorous Chinese people. One young American said he felt an abundance of positive energy from the Chinese people.
The judgment of the people is like sunshine that eliminates prejudice. The fusion of hearts is the power that breaks down barriers. We welcome friends from all countries to step out of their information cocoons and remove tinted glasses, so they can witness a more authentic and vibrant China with their own eyes and feel the vibrant vitality of 1.4 billion Chinese people with an open heart. Thank you!
Reporter from Kyodo News (Japan):
Minister Wang Yi, hello. Since November last year, after former Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba met with President Xi Jinping in Peru, Japanese Foreign Minister and representatives from Japan’s business community have successively visited China. Bilateral exchanges between the two countries have become increasingly active. However, there remain many issues between the two countries. What is your view on the current state of China-Japan relations? In order to comprehensively promote a strategic, mutually beneficial relationship between China and Japan, what new measures will be introduced to facilitate cooperation? Also, will China respond positively to Japan’s concerns and expectations regarding the resumption of seafood imports and creating a stable environment for Japanese enterprises in China?Wang Yi:
In November last year, the leaders of China and Japan reached an important consensus and agreed to fully promote a strategic, mutually beneficial relationship between China and Japan in accordance with the spirit of the four political documents, in order to build a constructive and stable China-Japan relationship that meets the requirements of the new era. Thanks to the joint efforts of both sides, the China-Japan relationship has shown a positive trend of improvement and development. We welcome increased exchanges among all sectors of the two societies, deeper mutual benefit and cooperation, and improved people-to-people feelings, as these all serve the long-term interests of both sides. Regarding the specific concerns raised by the Japanese side, China will handle them responsibly and in accordance with the law.I would like to particularly emphasize that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Remembering history is to better create the future. Forgetting history leads to losing direction. In the past, Japanese militarism committed brutal crimes against the peoples of China and other Asian countries, bringing deep suffering to the Japanese people. Preventing the resurgence of militarism is an obligation that Japan must never relax, and it is an unwavering determination of the Chinese and other Asian peoples. In the face of the test of conscience and integrity, Japan should adhere to the spirit of its pacifist constitution and continue on the path of peaceful development.
The One-China Principle is the political foundation of China-Japan relations. It has been 80 years since Taiwan’s return to China, yet there are still those in Japan who refuse to reflect on the past and collude with “Taiwan independence” forces. We must warn these people that instead of promoting “if Taiwan is in trouble, then Japan is in trouble,” they should remember that stirring up trouble in Taiwan is tantamount to inviting trouble for Japan.
China and Japan have a long history of exchanges. Japan should know best that China is a force for peace and a neighbor who keeps its promises. For over a thousand years, China has always brought opportunities to Japan rather than threats. In the face of the dramatic changes in history, what is the proper way to be good neighbors and what is the trend of the times? Insightful people in Japan should reflect deeply and act wisely.

Last month, US Secretary of State Rubio made his first visit to Latin America and threatened that if Panama does not keep its distance from China, the US will take measures against Panama. Other Latin American countries have received similar threats. How will China respond to this pressure? Will this be one of the topics at the upcoming China-Latin America Forum?Wang Yi:
China-Latin America cooperation is a form of South-South cooperation that is based on mutual support and not on geopolitical calculation. In its dealings with Latin American countries, China has always adhered to the principles of equality and mutual benefit, never seeking spheres of influence or targeting any party.Latin American people aim to build their own homes rather than being relegated to someone else’s backyard; Latin American countries aspire to independence, not to a Monroe Doctrine. China-Latin America cooperation is welcomed because it respects the will of the Latin American people, meets the needs of Latin American countries, and offers a reliable and promising choice for Latin American revitalization.
In the new era, under the guidance of President Xi Jinping and Latin American leaders, and with the support of the China-Latin America Forum mechanism, the building of a China-Latin America community of shared destiny has achieved fruitful results, benefiting all peoples.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the formal operation of the China-Latin America Forum. China will host the fourth ministerial meeting of the forum in the first half of this year. Taking this opportunity, both sides will overcome geographical and other barriers and push China-Latin America cooperation to a new level. Thank you!
Reporter from Phoenix TV:
For some time now, a few countries have propagated the view that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not equal the One-China Principle, that it does not clearly define Taiwan’s sovereignty, and does not prevent Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. What is your response to this?Wang Yi:
Such a view is an outright challenge to the authority of the United Nations and the post-World War II international order—it is extremely absurd and dangerous. Those who spread this view should first refresh their basic knowledge.Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory—this is both history and fact. This year marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s restoration. The victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression brought Taiwan back to the Chinese mainland. The major Allied powers at that time issued the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, which clearly stipulated that Taiwan, which Japan had taken by force, was to be returned to China, and Japan acknowledged its unconditional surrender in accordance with the Potsdam Proclamation. These documents confirm China’s sovereignty over Taiwan and form an important component of the post-war international order.
In 1971, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 2758 by an overwhelming majority, deciding to restore the legitimate rights of the People’s Republic of China in the UN and to immediately expel the representatives of the Taiwan authorities from the UN and its affiliated organizations. This resolution completely resolved the issue of China’s representation in the UN—including Taiwan—and completely eliminated any possibility of creating “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.” The only designation for the Taiwan region in the UN is “Taiwan Province, China.” Taiwan has never been a country, and it never will be. Advocating “Taiwan independence” is splitting the country; supporting “Taiwan independence” is interfering in China’s internal affairs; and condoning “Taiwan independence” undermines stability in the Taiwan Strait.
The principle of sovereignty is the cornerstone of the UN Charter, and no country or person should apply double standards. Respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries means supporting China’s complete reunification. Upholding the One-China Principle means opposing any form of “Taiwan independence.” Achieving complete reunification is the common aspiration of all Chinese and is an unstoppable trend and a matter of great justice. “Taiwan independence” is like playing with fire, and “using Taiwan to contain China” is like a mantis trying to stop a chariot. China will eventually be and must be reunified. Thank you!
Reporter from Xinhua (Pakistan):
China has always regarded its neighboring countries as its home, but the United States is deploying intermediate-range missiles in the region, stirring up conflicts. Some neighboring countries face high security risks, adding instability to the area. These countries hope to share in China’s development dividends but also worry that Chinese products might impact their domestic industries. How does China view the situation in its neighborhood, and what new considerations does it have for its neighborhood diplomacy?Wang Yi:
Asia has experienced rapid growth in this century and has become a global development hub and a peaceful, stable oasis—a situation that is hard-won and must be cherished and protected. Asia is not only China’s home but also the common home of all Asian countries. President Xi Jinping has proposed the “Sincerity, Trust, Benefit, and Inclusiveness” approach to neighborhood diplomacy, which has opened up new avenues for friendly cooperation with our neighbors. Today, China has reached a consensus on building a community of shared destiny with 17 neighboring countries, forming two clusters of shared destiny in the Southeast Asian and Central Asian regions. We have also signed Belt and Road Cooperation Agreements with 25 neighboring countries, making China the largest trading partner for 18 of them. Today, China has become the center of stability in Asia, the engine of economic development, and the pillar of regional security.Of course, it is natural that neighbors sometimes have disagreements. Historical issues and real conflicts of interest need to be properly managed. However, we believe that “a harmonious family prospers in all endeavors.” As long as we adhere to the concept of a “shared home” and the direction of building a community of shared destiny, and engage in equal consultation and mutual compromise, we will certainly be able to resolve differences and achieve win-win cooperation. China will continue to expand its unilateral opening-up to its neighbors, sharing more development dividends with them.
Regarding the US deployment of intermediate-range missiles in the region, China firmly opposes it, and neighboring countries do not welcome it. Over the years, the so-called “Indo-Pacific Strategy” launched by the US has done little for the region except to stir up trouble and create divisions. It has been more successful at causing problems than at solving them.
Asia should not be an arena for great-power competition; it should instead serve as a demonstration field for international cooperation. We advocate for an open regionalism that allows all Asian countries to share in the region’s development opportunities based on mutual respect and win-win cooperation. Thank you!

China and Europe have been facing prolonged tensions in economic and trade relations, especially in new energy and electric vehicle sectors. In this context, how does the Ministry of Foreign Affairs view the development of China-Europe relations?Wang Yi:
This year marks the 50th anniversary of China-Europe diplomatic relations. Looking back over the past half-century, the most valuable experience has been mutual respect, the most powerful driving force has been win-win cooperation, the strongest consensus has been on multilateralism, and the most accurate positioning has been that of partnership.Over the past 50 years, China-Europe cooperation has made remarkable progress: bilateral trade has increased from $2.4 billion to $780 billion, and bilateral investment has grown from nearly zero to nearly $260 billion. The China-Europe Railway Express has cumulatively operated over 100,000 trains, becoming a golden channel connecting Asia and Europe.
Today, China and Europe together account for more than one-third of the world’s economic output, and the strategic significance and global influence of China-Europe cooperation are greater than ever. A healthy and stable China-Europe relationship will not only benefit both sides but will also illuminate the world.
Earlier this year, President Xi Jinping spoke with European Council President Costa, noting that the more severe and complex the international situation becomes, the more China and Europe should adhere to the founding principles of their diplomatic relations, strengthen strategic communication, enhance strategic trust, and maintain the partnership. China remains confident in its relationship with Europe and believes that Europe can be a trusted partner. Both sides have the capability and wisdom to resolve their differences through friendly consultations, paving the way for the next 50 years of cooperation. Thank you!
Reporter from United Daily (China Daily):
Last year, the Merdeka Survey Center in Malaysia and the Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore reported a significant rise in favorable views toward China among Southeast Asians, while a survey by the Pew Research Center showed that people in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America—the Global South—are more inclined to give China a positive evaluation compared to those in Europe and the United States. How do you view these poll results and the differences among them?Wang Yi:
People-to-people friendship is the foundation of bilateral relations and the driving force for peace. With China’s continued economic and social development and the expansion of high-level opening-up, exchanges between China and other countries have become more frequent, and the distance between us is narrowing. You mentioned that people in the Global South have given China a positive evaluation, and that is indeed a fact. China has always treated developing countries with sincerity and has built natural closeness and mutual recognition with them. At the same time, I have also noticed that in developed countries, there is a growing trend of embracing China. Whether it is through tourism to China or interaction on social media platforms, people are witnessing a safe, open, and modern nation and meeting friendly, tolerant, and humorous Chinese people. One young American said that he felt an abundance of positive energy from the Chinese people.
The judgment of the people is like sunshine that dispels prejudice. The fusion of hearts is the force that breaks down barriers. We welcome friends from all countries to step out of their information cocoons and remove tinted glasses, so they can witness a more authentic and vibrant China with their own eyes and feel the vigorous vitality of 1.4 billion Chinese people with an open heart. Thank you!
Reporter from Kyodo News (Japan):
Minister Wang Yi, hello. Since November last year, after former Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba met with President Xi Jinping in Peru, followed by visits by Japanese Foreign Minister and delegations from Japan’s business community, bilateral exchanges between China and Japan have become increasingly active. However, there remain many issues between the two countries. What is your view on the current state of China-Japan relations? In order to comprehensively promote a strategic, mutually beneficial China-Japan relationship, what new measures will be introduced to facilitate cooperation? Will China also respond positively to Japan’s concerns and expectations regarding the resumption of seafood imports and ensuring a stable business environment for Japanese enterprises in China?Wang Yi:
In November last year, the leaders of China and Japan reached an important consensus, agreeing to fully promote a strategic, mutually beneficial relationship between China and Japan in accordance with the spirit of the four political documents, and to build a constructive and stable China-Japan relationship that meets the requirements of the new era. Through joint efforts, the China-Japan relationship has shown a positive trend of improvement and development. We welcome increased exchanges among all sectors of society, deeper mutual cooperation, and improved people-to-people feelings, all of which serve the long-term interests of both sides. With regard to the specific concerns raised by the Japanese side, China will handle them responsibly in accordance with the law and regulations.I would like to emphasize that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Remembering history is essential to better creating the future. Forgetting history would lead to losing our way. In the past, Japanese militarism committed heinous crimes against the peoples of China and other Asian countries, bringing great suffering to the Japanese people. Preventing the resurgence of militarism is an obligation that Japan must never neglect, and it is an unwavering determination of the Chinese and other Asian peoples. In the face of the test of conscience and integrity, Japan should adhere to the spirit of its pacifist constitution and continue on the path of peaceful development.

It has been 80 years since Taiwan’s return to China, yet there are still those in Japan who refuse to reflect on the past and collude with “Taiwan independence” forces. We must warn such people that rather than stirring up trouble in Taiwan—thereby creating trouble for Japan—they should remember that causing trouble in Taiwan is tantamount to finding trouble for Japan.
China and Japan have a long history of exchanges. Japan should know well that China is a force for peace and a trustworthy neighbor. For over a thousand years, China has always brought opportunities to Japan rather than threats. In the face of dramatic changes in the world, what is the proper way for neighbors to coexist and what is the inevitable trend? Insightful people in Japan should reflect deeply and act wisely.

Minister, hello. Last year, China safely evacuated more than 10,000 compatriots from abroad. Recently, cross-border online gambling and fraud have drawn high public attention, with some comments suggesting that such issues may affect the movement of Chinese personnel with related countries. As more and more Chinese citizens travel abroad, how will the Ministry of Foreign Affairs better protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens overseas? Thank you.Wang Yi:
The Party Central Committee places great importance on our compatriots overseas; the well-being and safety of our people are always our concern. In 2024, we safely evacuated more than 10,000 Chinese citizens from high-risk areas such as Lebanon and Haiti, handled over 50,000 consular protection cases, answered over 500,000 calls on the 12308 consular protection hotline, and issued more than 5,000 overseas safety advisories. Our goal is that no matter how far away you are, you always feel the presence of your motherland.Cross-border online gambling and fraud are major concerns for the public and remain a top priority for us. For some time now, under the joint concern of China and neighboring country leaders, law enforcement and diplomatic departments have worked together to effectively cooperate across borders and rescue Chinese citizens in distress. The online fraud hubs in northern Myanmar near the border have all been cleared, and China, Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos are currently working together to concentrate on cracking down on online fraud in the Thai-Myanmar border region. Our task is to sever the black hands reaching out to the people and to remove the cancer of online fraud.
